Meta Offers Incentives

Meta Offers $5,000 Incentive to Lure Creators Amid TikTok Uncertainty

Meta is making a big play to bring creators to its platforms, Facebook and Instagram. They’re offering up to $5,000 (£4,040) to popular creators in the U.S. who switch from other apps. This seems like a smart move, especially with all the uncertainty around TikTok's future in the U.S.

The Offer: Cash and Perks for New Creators

With Meta’s “Breakthrough Bonus Programme,” creators who come over to Facebook or Instagram from other platforms can earn cash based on their “social presence.” To be eligible, they need to post regularly in their first 90 days—20 original reels on Facebook and 10 on Instagram every month.

But there’s a catch: only creators who are completely new to Facebook or Instagram can apply. Meta will look at each application individually, and those who get accepted will also receive a free subscription to their blue check verification system.

While TikTok isn’t mentioned directly, the timing is telling. With TikTok having 170 million users in the U.S.—many of whom depend on it for their income—Meta seems ready to step in and offer a lifeline to creators who might be looking for new options as questions about TikTok's future linger.

Meta’s Tactical Play Against TikTok

Meta’s incentive program is just one of several recent strategies aimed at taking advantage of TikTok’s potential weaknesses. Last week, Meta launched "Edits," a video editing app similar to ByteDance’s CapCut, which had gone offline following ByteDance’s U.S. ban.

Moreover, Meta rolled out new features to directly compete with TikTok’s advantages. These include affiliate links that enable users to monetize their videos by incorporating shoppable content right within their posts—similar to TikTok Shop.

Instagram has also seen a visual overhaul, changing user profiles from the classic square posts to rectangular ones, clearly reflecting TikTok’s style. While some creators are not pleased with these changes, Instagram head Adam Mosseri acknowledged that the rollout could have been managed better.

Why Now?

The uncertainty surrounding TikTok, along with Meta’s recent innovations, illustrates the company’s strategy. By providing financial incentives and mimicking TikTok's features, Meta aims to draw in both creators and their audiences.

For creators, Meta’s initiative presents both a chance and a risk. Will $5,000 and new tools be sufficient to entice creators away from TikTok, where many have already built their brands?

One thing is clear—Meta is in it for the long haul, and the competition for creator loyalty has just become much more intriguing.
