Reddit Ban X Links

Reddit Communities Ban X Links Amid Backlash Over Elon Musk Gesture

Over 100 Reddit communities, known as subreddits, have taken action against Elon Musk by prohibiting links to X (formerly Twitter). This decision follows a controversial arm gesture Musk made at a rally celebrating Donald Trump's return to office.

While addressing the crowd, Musk extended his arm straight out twice, thanking them for "making it happen." Critics, including some historians, have likened the gesture to a Nazi salute, leading to widespread outrage on social media. Musk, however, has dismissed these claims, labeling the comparisons to Hitler as "tired" and "dirty tricks."

Despite his defense, not everyone is convinced. Many Reddit users have labeled his actions as "hateful," prompting moderators from numerous subreddits to block content linking to X.

Subreddits Take a Stand

The ban includes some of Reddit's largest and most influential communities. Among them are r/NBA, boasting 15 million members; r/TwoXChromosomes, a female-focused subreddit with 14 million members; and r/NFL, with 12 million members. Other subreddits that have banned X links include fan communities for Liverpool, Celtic, and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as gaming hubs for titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and World of Warcraft.

Even geographic subreddits, such as those for New Jersey, South Korea, and British Columbia, have joined the movement. Beyond sports and gaming, communities focused on a wide range of topics, from RuPaul’s Drag Race to Disneyland, are discussing or implementing bans.

However, Reddit has clarified that there is no overarching policy against X. In a statement to the BBC, the company reiterated its commitment to "freedom of speech and freedom of association." Moderation on Reddit is primarily community-driven, meaning that individual subreddit moderators determine what content is permissible.

Impact on X and Reddit

The ban on X could really shake things up. A lot of subreddits, especially those focused on sports and gaming, often share posts from athletes, analysts, and journalists on X. For example, some of the most liked posts on the r/NBA subreddit are just screenshots of tweets. This ban might also lead to less traffic and engagement on X, which could hurt the platform’s revenue. But it’s still unclear if these restrictions are going to be temporary or stick around for good.

Protests on Reddit: A Familiar Story

Reddit has seen its fair share of community protests before. Back in 2023, thousands of subreddits went dark to protest changes in how Reddit operates. Some even limited their posts to just pictures of comedian John Oliver as a way to make a statement. In the end, those protests didn’t lead to much change, and Reddit’s leadership kept things as they were.

It’s hard to say if the X ban will have a long-term effect or if it will fizzle out like before. For now, though, Reddit users are making it clear that they won’t put up with actions they see as unfair, even if it comes from one of the world’s most famous billionaires. This situation isn’t just about one action or one person—it shows how online communities can really make their voices heard in today’s digital world.
