Trump’s Bold First Week: Executive Orders That Could Reshape America
In just a few days after taking office, President Donald Trump has initiated a series of executive orders and policy shifts, addressing a range of topics from immigration to energy, diversity, and pardons. Here’s a closer examination of the significant actions that are already creating a stir across the nation and beyond.
Crackdown on Immigration
Trump quickly moved to reinstate strict immigration policies. He declared a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border and brought back the "Remain in Mexico" policy, which requires asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their applications are processed.
A sweeping asylum ban was also implemented, targeting migrants whom Trump labeled as part of an "invasion." Additionally, refugee admissions were halted entirely, leaving nearly 1,660 Afghans who had been approved for resettlement in limbo.
In a particularly contentious decision, Trump signed an order to eliminate birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. to non-citizen parents. This action prompted immediate legal challenges, as it contradicts established constitutional interpretations.
The president also directed the Justice Department to pursue the death penalty for undocumented immigrants convicted of specific crimes, classified criminal cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, and announced intentions to invoke the Alien Enemies Act against foreign gang members.

Federal Workforce Overhaul
Trump aims to transform the federal workforce. He reinstated his previous Schedule F executive order, which simplifies the process of firing government employees, and imposed a freeze on federal hiring, except in essential areas like national security and immigration enforcement.
He mandated that all federal employees return to the office full-time, reversing remote work policies, and instructed agencies to identify probationary employees who could be more easily dismissed.
Diversity and Gender Policies
Trump implemented significant changes to federal diversity initiatives. He signed an executive order that dismantled offices focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), placing DEI staff on immediate paid leave. His administration is currently reviewing federal contractors that provided DEI training and has revoked a pivotal Equal Employment Opportunity order from 1965.
Policies regarding gender identity also saw a reversal. Trump rescinded a Biden-era directive that permitted transgender individuals to serve in the military and instructed agencies to recognize only two genders, male and female, in official documents. The use of pronoun preferences and gender identity designations was also prohibited in federal contexts.
Energy and Climate
In declaring a national energy emergency, Trump signed orders to boost oil and gas production, roll back protections for Arctic lands and coastal waters, and suspend offshore wind projects. He removed restrictions on liquid natural gas export permits and eliminated regulations that encouraged a shift to electric vehicles.
In a decision with far-reaching consequences, Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement, effectively excluding the world's largest historical greenhouse gas emitter from the global effort to address climate change.
Global Health and TikTok’s Lifeline
Trump directed the U.S. to exit the World Health Organization, criticizing its management of the COVID-19 pandemic and other health emergencies.
He also postponed the enforcement of a potential ban on TikTok by 75 days, leaving millions of American users uncertain about the app's future.
Pardons for Jan. 6 Rioters
In one of his most controversial moves, Trump pardoned around 1,500 supporters who were convicted for their involvement in the January 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol. This group included leaders from far-right organizations such as the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys, which has led to significant backlash from various political factions.
Introducing DOGE
Trump also launched the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an advisory body aimed at reducing government spending and bureaucracy. This initiative has already triggered lawsuits questioning its legality and functions.
A Divisive Start
From immigration to climate change, President Trump’s early actions are shaping up to create a contentious term. With lawsuits accumulating and discussions intensifying nationwide, it’s evident that Trump is committed to fulfilling his campaign promises, regardless of the consequences. As Americans prepare for the fallout from these decisions, all eyes are on Washington to see what unfolds next.
