Sindhu's Grit Meets Tunjung's Precision
Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu's courageous effort came to a disappointing end as she exited the India Open Super 750 quarterfinals on Friday. In a thrilling 62-minute match against Indonesia's Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, a bronze medallist from the Paris World Championships, Sindhu lost with scores of 9-21, 21-19, 17-21.
After a rocky start in the first game, Sindhu made a strong comeback in the second but ultimately fell short in the deciding game. "It's sad that I lost after such a tough fight, but this is how the game is. I’ll come back stronger," Sindhu reflected post-match.
A Rocky Start for Sindhu
The match kicked off with Sindhu struggling to find her rhythm. Tunjung took control in the first game, quickly establishing an 11-4 lead at the mid-game interval with her precise drop shots and quick movements on the court. Meanwhile, Sindhu's unforced errors allowed Tunjung to secure the opener 21-9 in no time.
"The first game was uncomfortable for me. I made easy mistakes and couldn’t execute my shots properly," Sindhu admitted.
A Stunning Comeback in the Second
In the second game, Sindhu turned the tide, showcasing her signature attacking style. Although Tunjung initially surged to a 6-2 lead, Sindhu fought back, leveling the score at 9-9. Her powerful smashes and strategic placements propelled her to a 14-10 lead.
Tunjung rallied to tie the game at 14-14, but Sindhu remained composed. She secured two game points and ultimately clinched the second set 21-19 after Tunjung made an error at the net.
Intense Decider Ends in Agony
The third game showcased both players at their best. Tunjung jumped to a 10-8 lead, but Sindhu quickly erased the deficit after the break, applying pressure on her rival. With the score tied at 14-14, the momentum shifted back and forth. Tunjung, however, regained her footing, moving ahead to a 17-14 lead with some well-placed shots. Sindhu's determination shone through as she equalized once more. Yet, Tunjung's accuracy proved crucial as she clinched three match points and finished the match with a stunning cross-court winner. "I need to be more consistent and keep the shuttle in play during critical moments," Sindhu reflected, recognizing the long rallies and strategic exchanges that characterized the match.
Looking Ahead
Despite the defeat, Sindhu's performance underscores her resilience and determination. As she works on refining her game, fans can look forward to her coming back even stronger in future tournaments. Meanwhile, Tunjung moves on to the semifinals, demonstrating why she is a formidable contender in women's singles. The India Open may not have concluded as Sindhu wished, but her fighting spirit continues to inspire aspiring athletes around the globe.
