In a shocking revelation, a new report by the Washington-based research group India Hate Lab has uncovered a staggering 74% increase in hate speech incidents against minorities in India in 2024, with the numbers peaking during the country’s fiercely contested national elections. The report, released on Monday, documented 1,165 instances of hate speech, with Muslims bearing the brunt of these attacks, accounting for a staggering 98.5% of the recorded cases.
The findings have sparked widespread concern, particularly as the report highlights the involvement of high-profile political figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, as frequent purveyors of hate speech. Most of these incidents occurred in states governed by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or its larger alliance, raising questions about the role of political rhetoric in fueling division.
A Disturbing Trend
The report paints a grim picture of India’s social fabric, revealing that hate speech was most prevalent at political rallies, religious processions, and cultural gatherings. Of the 1,165 incidents recorded, a whopping 79.9% (931 events) took place in BJP-ruled or coalition-led states. Three states—Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh—accounted for nearly half of all hate speech events in 2024.
The BJP itself was identified as the organizer of 340 such events, marking a shocking 580% increase from the previous year. The report also noted a troubling escalation in the nature of hate speech, with political and religious leaders openly inciting violence against Muslims. This included calls for economic boycotts of Muslim businesses, destruction of homes, and even the demolition of religious structures.
Elections and Escalation
The timing of these incidents is particularly alarming. May 2024, the peak of India’s national elections, saw 269 hate speech events—the highest number recorded in a single month. During this period, Prime Minister Modi faced criticism for using divisive rhetoric targeting Muslims, while the Election Commission intervened to remove a BJP social media post accused of “demonizing” the Muslim community.
The BJP has consistently denied allegations of Islamophobia and hate speech. On Tuesday, national spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill defended the party, stating that India’s legal system is “structured to maintain peace, order, and ensure non-violence at any cost.” He dismissed the report as part of an “anti-India reports industry” aimed at tarnishing the country’s image.
Minorities Under Fire
While Muslims were the primary targets, the report also highlighted hate speech against Christians, albeit to a lesser extent. Rights groups have long warned of increasing discrimination and violence against minorities since the BJP came to power in 2014. Stories of Muslims being beaten, humiliated, and made to feel “invisible in their own country” have become all too common, painting a troubling picture of societal polarization.
A Call for Accountability
The India Hate Lab report underscores the urgent need for accountability and action to curb hate speech and its devastating consequences. As India continues to grapple with its identity as a diverse and pluralistic nation, the findings serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of divisive rhetoric and the importance of safeguarding the rights of all citizens.

The question remains: Will this report serve as a wake-up call, or will the voices of hate continue to drown out the calls for unity? Only time will tell.
