Electricity Prices in Pakistan May Decrease by Rs2 Per Unit Following Quarterly Adjustment

In a promising development for electricity users throughout Pakistan, including Karachi, power distribution companies (DISCOs) have approached the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) with a request to lower electricity prices by Rs2 per unit as part of the quarterly tariff adjustment process.

Request for Relief

DISCOs have applied NEPRA, aiming for a total relief of Rs52.12 billion for consumers in the second quarterly adjustment of the current fiscal year. The suggested reduction encompasses several cost components, such as:

  • Rs50.66 billion in capacity charges
  • Rs2.66 billion reduction in transmission and distribution losses
  • Rs2.69 billion earmarked for operations and maintenance

NEPRA has set a hearing date for February 12 to assess the proposal and decide whether to grant the requested relief.

Impact on Consumers

Should NEPRA approve the request, the tariff adjustment for the October–December 2024 period will also apply to K-Electric consumers, offering relief to both households and businesses in Karachi.

A Step Toward Economic Ease

This proposed reduction represents a significant step amid ongoing inflation and economic challenges. Lower electricity prices could provide essential relief to consumers and potentially reduce operational costs for power-dependent industries.

What’s Next?

Consumers and stakeholders are now looking forward to the February 12 hearing, where NEPRA will review the application and make a decision on this important issue. If approved, this reduction could help alleviate the financial strain of electricity costs for millions across the nation.
