New Gwadar International Airport: What Makes Pakistan’s Largest Airport Stand Out?

The national flag carrier, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), marked a significant milestone as its first commercial flight landed at the New Gwadar International Airport on Monday. This newly inaugurated airport, spanning an impressive 4,300 acres, is officially the largest in Pakistan by area.

The ATR aircraft, carrying 46 passengers, departed Karachi at 9:50 AM and landed at Gwadar's state-of-the-art facility at 11:15 AM. The inaugural flight was celebrated with a water cannon salute and a formal ceremony attended by high-profile officials, including Defense and Aviation Minister Khawaja Asif, Governor of Balochistan Jaffer Khan Mandokhail, and Chief Minister Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti.

16 Years in the Making

The New Gwadar Airport project was initially approved in 2009 under the Pakistan People’s Party government, but construction only began a decade later in 2019. The airport took 16 years to become operational, a timeline marred by delays due to security challenges, particularly threats to Chinese engineers working on-site.

Part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), this project is a flagship under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), with significant financial contributions from China, alongside support from Oman and the Government of Pakistan.

A Glimpse of Modernity

So, what sets this airport apart?

  1. Cutting-Edge Infrastructure: With a 3.6-kilometer runway capable of accommodating large aircraft like the Boeing 747 and Airbus A380, the New Gwadar Airport boasts advanced air traffic control systems, modern navigation aids, and high-end security features.

  2. Passenger-Friendly Facilities: Designed to handle 400,000 passengers annually (33,000 monthly), the airport is equipped with spacious lounges, modern amenities, and signage in English, Urdu, and Chinese.

  3. A Strategic Hub: Positioned as a future hub for international cargo and passenger transit, the airport aims to connect Pakistan with Central Asia, the Middle East, and beyond.

The Price of Progress

Originally estimated at $90.6 million in 2009, the project's costs soared to $246 million, reflecting delays and revisions. While the funding came from multiple sources, including grants from China and Oman, the significant price increase has drawn scrutiny.

A Mixed Bag of Expectations

During the inauguration ceremony, Khawaja Asif hailed the airport as a "beacon of prosperity for the people of Balochistan," emphasizing its potential to boost investment, create jobs, and stimulate local businesses. However, not everyone shares this optimism.

Critics argue that the airport’s economic viability is uncertain, given the region's underdeveloped infrastructure and lack of robust commercial activity. Senator Jan Baledi of the National Party highlighted that several airports in Balochistan, including those in Ormara, Jiwani, and Pasni, remain non-functional. He questioned whether sufficient business or transit traffic would justify the new airport's operations.

Former PIA marketing executive Irshad Ghani expressed similar concerns. “If Gwadar Port were fully operational, with shipments moving to Afghanistan and Central Asia, this airport could have been a game-changer. But with CPEC progressing slowly, its current utility appears limited.”

Challenges in the Path of Progress

The airport’s inauguration was delayed multiple times due to unrest in Balochistan. Protests, including a sit-in by the Baloch Yakjehti Committee in July 2024, and security threats, such as the August attack on an FC camp in Bela, disrupted the schedule. In October, Chinese Premier Li Qiang conducted a virtual inauguration, but full-fledged operations only began this month.

While the New Gwadar International Airport is an engineering marvel and a testament to Sino-Pak cooperation, its future as a viable commercial hub depends on the revival of Gwadar’s port and the overall success of CPEC.

For now, it stands as a symbol of ambition and hope—a gateway to possibilities for Pakistan’s economic growth and its strategic ties with China. Whether it becomes a bustling hub or a missed opportunity remains to be seen.
