Mitchell Owen’s Record-Breaking Century Powers Hobart Hurricanes to First BBL Title

The Hobart Hurricanes just won their first Big Bash League (BBL) title in an exciting match, thanks to a fantastic century from opener Mitchell Owen. Playing in front of a lively home crowd at Ninja Stadium, the Hurricanes secured a seven-wicket win over the Sydney Thunder with 30 balls to spare.

Owen’s Heroics

Owen delivered an amazing performance, scoring 108 runs off just 42 balls, which included 11 massive sixes. His century, reached in only 39 balls, matched the record for the fastest in BBL history, leaving the Thunder bowlers struggling. The 23-year-old from Tasmania really made the most of the big moment, taking apart the opposing bowlers and setting up a strong chase.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Owen shared after the game. “I was just trying to stick to my game plan—get us off to a good start—and thankfully it came off today.”

Even after Owen was out, the Hurricanes kept their momentum going, with captain Matthew Wade scoring 32 off 17 balls and Ben McDermott adding 18 off 12 balls, leading the team to victory in just 14.1 overs.

Thunder’s Solid Start Falls Short

Earlier in the match, the Sydney Thunder managed to score a decent 182-7 in their 20 overs, thanks to a solid 97-run opening partnership between Jason Sangha (67 off 42) and David Warner (48 off 31). However, Hurricanes captain Nathan Ellis changed the game with a fantastic bowling performance, taking 3 wickets for just 23 runs and breaking that important partnership.

Riley Meredith, the Hurricanes’ fast bowler, also shone by taking three middle-order wickets, including the key dismissal of England’s Sam Billings, who was bowled out for 20. Even though Chris Jordan had a tough outing with figures of 0-47, the Hurricanes made sure the Thunder’s total was within reach.

Deserved Champions

The Hobart Hurricanes were the standout team throughout the season, finishing at the top of the regular-season standings. Their impressive performance led to a well-deserved championship, leaving the Melbourne Stars as the only team still seeking their first BBL trophy. The victory brought immense joy to the Hurricanes and their supporters, who had long awaited this success. It also solidified Mitchell Owen’s reputation as one of the league’s most thrilling players, with his remarkable century likely to be remembered for many seasons ahead.
